Router performance is good - USB drive has limitations : Linksys E3200 High-Performance Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Router

Are you replacing an old Linksys router? If so, be prepared for weaker performance. I bought this to replace my 8 year old Linksys WRT54GS, but the G and N performance on the new router was not as good as the range and speed of my old G router. This was frustrating and I spent hours with Linksys support confirming this. Why the new Linksys routers are not better than their 8 year old routers is beyond me.

I wound up returning the router, and "cascading" a Linksys E2000 with my old Linksys router. I chose to use two routers simultaneously so I have the old one for demanding tasks, and the new one as a backup and for hard wired, always on devices. The E2000 is a year older, less expensive, and performs better than all the new Linksys routers, as CNET documented in the test results table: [...] - you can compare this to the E4200 review - Linksys's current best, most expensive router - to see that the E2000 beats it in the 2.4GHz frequency.

Don't spend your weekends troubleshooting routers like I have. If the weekly rebooting of your old Linksys is driving you to buy newer router like me, be aware that the newer Linksys routers (and even Belkin N600 HD - I tried that too) are not as good as the older routers.

Details: I have a Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 modem, Comcast 22MBPS cable internet service, and measured speed using speedtest.net and range using an iPod touch for 2.4GHz G signals, and a Dell 15R laptop for 2.4GHz N signals.

Upgraded from the DLink 855 to the Netgear N900 : Netgear N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router (WNDR4500)

I have tested and used both the WNDR4500 and the WNDR3800, looking at signal strengths, throughputs, feature sets, and everyday use. The 4500 has a more amplified signal to broadcast the signal farther, which can translate into greater throughputs for a given location. It also uses three spatial streams, the 3x3 transmit/receive technology, so you can obtain up to 450 Mbps data transfers on either 2.4 or 5 GHz band if paired with a 3 antenna 3x3 NIC adapter in the client (eg notebook computer). The 3800 is a 2x2 access point and can send/receive up to 300 Mbps on either 2.4 or 5 GHz band. Both routers use the same user friendly firmware setup and both routers have been rock solid performers without need for rebooting.

What I have found in my testing is that the more amplified signal of the 4500 does equate to better performance overall versus the 3800 with non-bonded channels in the 2.4 GHz band and bonded channels in the 5 GHz band, though both routers were inconsistent with both finding and maintaining a 5 GHz signal in my most remote test locations. The 3800 may perform better with bonded channels in the 2.4 GHz. The explanation for the performance of the 3800 is at least partially due to the heavy neighborhood wireless signal traffic around me, especially when looking at bonded channel 2.4 GHz testing - occupying more channels with the 450 Mbps Mode of the 4500 will interact with more wireless signals in my neighborhood than the 300 Mbps Mode of the 3800 leading creating more issues with negotiating those frequencies. One other comment on throughputs that I found interesting, when testing the 2.4 GHz band with the router 2-4 feet from the notebook, the 3800 slightly edged out the 4500. Could this possibly be due to the more amplified signal of the 4500 creating a slight interference?

I have used but not tested throughputs with a bonded channel on the 2.4 GHz band. There is heavy traffic in my neighborhood that makes use of a bonded channel on the 2.4 GHz band quite variable in performance. Besides, the Good Neighbor policy of WiFi certified wireless routers dictate that the router switch to a non-bonded 20 MHz channel automatically in this circumstance. However, I did notice that internet speed testing did improve oftentimes with a properly selected bonded channel in the 2.4 GHz band.

My initial impression of the two routers was that the 3800 performed better at my most remote locations on the 2.4 GHz band. Numerous checks of internet speed tests with both a notebook and a Roku media streamer showed that the 3800 was more often obtaining greater Mbps transfer rates. But, when using a LAN test software such as Iperf, which measures throughputs within the LAN and not subject to internet bottlenecks, the 4500 nearly always proved to be the best performer at all locations, especially in the 5 GHz band and significantly in certain locations of the home with the 2.4 GHz band.

For those wanting to stream Bluray, it is possible for both routers to do so if located in the same room (mid to upper 50's Mbps throughputs), but the 4500 might be able to do so one or even two rooms over in my location (mid to upper 40's Mbps). Bluray quality throughputs will also be possible even further with the 4500 on the 5 GHz band (110's Mbps for same room, 70 Mbps for 1-2 rooms over).

For those wanting to maximize signal strength, the 4500 does just that, and this does equate overall to more Mbps data throughputs for that location versus the 3800, though sometimes the difference is not always significant, especially in the 2.4 GHz band. For me, obtaining throughputs of 20 Mbps with the 4500 at my most remote location versus 16 Mbps with the 3800 is significant. I do like the feature set offered with the 3800, though, and this may be a significant factor with the buyer on which to purchase. But for raw power, the 4500 looks to be tops. Deciding which router is best for you may come down to feature set and bandwidth you will be operating on. If you want to use the 450 Mbps Mode of the 4500 for either 2.4 or 5 GHz band then you will need a NIC adapter that utilizes 3 antenna for 3 spatial streams. Even so, I would think a 2 antenna NIC adapter would benefit from the increased amplified signal of the 4500. I have an Intel 5300 NIC adapter in my notebook which uses 3 antenna for 3 spacial streams (3x3), so I am able to utilize the 450 Mbps Mode of the 4500. The 3800 requires only 2 antenna for its 300 Mbps transfer speeds Mode (2x2).

I believe there is good reason to buy either router and am happy with either one for my needs. As I said before, both routers have been rock solid in use without need for reboots. The firmware's GUI, called Genie, use by both routers is the easiest I've used for setting up a router. I would recommend either router to family and friends, based on their needs for streaming data, neighborhood wireless traffic, and feature set of the router as the deciding factors.

Bottom line comparing the 3800 to the 4500: For certain medium and long range locations using the 2,4 GHz band, and especially short and medium range locations using the 5 GHz band, the 4500 is the router to get. The feature set of the 3800 is tops, but if Netgear includes them in a future firmware update for the 4500, then then 4500 would be unquestionable king, not only because of its amplified signal and 3 antenna/spatial streams, but also because it has 2 USB ports built in.

Customer Review :

Probably one of the best Wi-Fi consumer routers ever made : ASUS Black Diamond Dual Band Wireless-N 600 Router (RT-N56U)

I recently purchased two other routers before purchasing this one to replace an older 2.4ghz router. The first router I purchased was the newly released Cisco Linksys E4200. I ended up returning it because I barely had a signal downstairs and slow output. My previous router usually had around 70%-80% signal downstairs however the E4200 would quickly lose signal the farther I moved away from the router. I purchased as a replacement the highly rated Netgear WNDR3700. This router had much better signal however it would not work with my external hard drive. Per review of online comments and Netgear's own website, the 3700 has issues being compatible with numerous external hard drives. Netgear has posted on their website about a dozen compatible hard drives that work with the 3700. I had the choice to either keep the 3700 and fork out another $50-$100 on a new external hard drive that would work or purchase another router with similar features. I ran across the Asus at my local electronic store. I never heard of this model before since it is a new release. Before I decided to purchase it, I went home and read the limited reviews I could find on it. Both expert and consumer reviews were positive. I ended up purchasing the Asus. I was completely blown away by the features and performance of this router. I have over 90% signal downstairs. My laptop is maintaining 230-270mbps connection when I am downstairs (about 30 feet away from router which is upstairs) which was impossible with both the E4200 and 3700. The user interface provides significant amount more custom options than both the Netgear and Cisco. My external HDD (Seagate) was instantly recognized by the router. I also found the wired connection runs smoother and faster than the 3700. The 3700 had a delay at times loading pages. Overall this is in my opinion the best performing router that I have ever owned. Currently the WNDR3700 is considered the best but it has been out for a while now. The Cisco E4200 claims to be the best however I disagree with this due to real hands-on experience with it. There is a good amount of owner complaints already being posted about the E4200 which is similar to issues that I also encountered. The only bad thing I found with this unit is that it does not allow wall mount option. For the price, performance and features, this is an excellent value and steal.

Great router with robust features, although the 5Ghz band signal and speed is erratic : Cisco-Linksys E4200 Dual-Band Wireless-N Router

The only negative is the price on this one, but I needed something that Had to be reliable since I was using it on a live streaming job. So the price was not a big issue. I just looked at it as insurance.

Setup was super easy. I love that it sets up a guest network automatically (which you can disable if you don't want it obviously).

I've never seen such fast speed over wireless and the range is awesome.

If it were not so expensive I would buy a few more for the home, but at this price it's going to be part of the streaming theory and that alone.

I can't advise this router enough. I usually use Netgear and love the brand, have used TrendNet with poor results, and have mixed results with LinkSys (which is why I was a bit concerned about buying this since Cisco purchased LinkSys). But I'm very happy.

Customer Review :

Cisco associate : Cisco-Linksys E3000 Wireless-N Router

The ease of setup of the Cisco-Linksys E3000 router astonished me! I had a studio and household Filled with manifold Pc's and Macs, both desktop and notebook computers, and a Pc server plus Mac G5 server for my AppleTv Library, iTunes Library, and this router self-configured itself with each and every computer/device/system that I own, some 12 machines in total, in less than 7 minutes for the full cycle of the auto-connect feature to take place.

That Floored me totally, and I'm an advanced networking expert, who was ready for a fully tough, manual setup of this router but figured I'd give it a go with the Auto-Connect feature of this router, by simply inserting the Cisco-Linksys Cd Rom into my Pc server's visual drive, and followed the prompts to the letter (to a point), let the router Auto-Configure each and every Pc and Mac in my mixed-stable of computers here in my studio and throughout the house, 8 computers here in my studio near the router's plug-in to my Time-Warner RoadRunner Hs Turbo Modem, and 4 other computers elsewhere in the house, and I'll be danged if the new E3000 didn't pull off the complete association routing in less than 7 minutes actual time! Crazy Good!

I immediately fired up the router's web interface and went into the advanced settings, and renamed the system from default to my regular/normal System's name, set up the web interface for my network Hard Drive and plugged in a 1Tb Usb external Hd for network sharing and backup services, reconfigured the password to my rather complex 26-digit and stamp password for extreme protection purposes, set the "renew Dhcp Lease" to my own exact schedule apart from default, adjusted Media and Ftp Server setting to active, and a lot of other "host services" to manual settings vs the default settings, and in less than 30 minutes total time I disconnected my former "N-Spec" router, and turned the duties over to the new E3000.

Suffice to say it's been nothing else but plug and play since then, with only a minor glitch to report, and that was maybe my own fault but it complex updating the firmware to the latest and greatest, and my update went awry somewhat...I ended up having to re-apply the new patch Twice before it took and set up correctly, and Bam!! All was well again, settings were intact, and when I restarted the system it fired right up, all popped up green, blue, and yellow Led's like it's supposed to do, and voila! Firmware update a success, all was well, and the system @ 100%.

The Dual-Band aspect of this router gives it a extra character, with the capability to transmit and receive signals and data simultaneously, at the same time literally, and assert its incredible bandwidth in both the 2.4Ghz and 5.8Ghz channels without fault of any sort, and that's an spectacular, feature! My AppleTv system works significantly good than it did with the old MaxPower N-Spec Routerat full speed ahead, it being a single-band router and some 5 years old at the time I substituted it with the E3000.

I find the web interface to be simple, and simplistic too, a nice interaction to work with when you want to customize any features, or change any settings manually vs the router's self-operating setups. I have yet to have to restart or "recycle" this router after some 5 months of use thus far, which I think to be very, very unusual given the nature of routers in general, but the Cisco-Linksys E3000 seems to be in a class by itself with respect to sustainability. It is also a router that you can place in any place with respect to its antennas being all internal (6 of them!), as I have located it Under My Work station now, and there's no contrast in the signal being all-pervasive and strong throughout my studio, and home to boot!

I also use the router to cope the management of my twin Raid system's web interface, and that uses one of the Gigabit Ethernet Ports of the E3000 and plugs directly into the Areca 1680Ix-8 Hardware Raid Controller, and that feature of the router has also worked without fail thus far, no issues at all! I have searched and tried to form out S*O*M*E* frailness that this new E3000 router has, but alas there is nothing left to write or say with respect to things that are wrong with it, because the dang thing just works 100% for the good!

Every day that I use my system here in the studio and throughout my home I marvel at its consistency, it steadfastness, and its power, just incredible in all those aspects of use with my heavy, heavy needs located upon it, and it's just fantastic. It would be hard to say "it could be better", because I just don't know How or What we could do so as to make it good than it is right now.

I am transmitting millions and millions of bytes of important facts up to Standford University in the Folding@Home program, with 5 active computers in the schedule here in my home and studio, and it's foremost that each and every byte gets transmitted up there for the benefit of mankind, and the important explore that the researchers are doing, and this great Cisco-Linksys E3000 keeps the candles "lit" in my contributions to the Folding@Home schedule hour by hour, day by day, and week by arduous week...it just doesn't fail me, and that is all I could ask of it!

I never plan I'd say something like this about a router, but this thing is So Far Ahead of all else out there that you can buy for your home or office use for a high-speed data network, be it from a Hd Cable Modem system like what I have with me here, a Dsl system, anyone way you can critically look at such a thing as a router which nothing else but is the lifeline in the middle of you and the internet, and all it can represent, but I'll say this for the record: I don't think that there's anyone good being made today, At Any Price, Any Configuration, Any Setup Whatsoever Than The Cicso-Linksys E3000 Router!

This thing is King of the Hill! I have nothing else but purchased 4 of them since they were released in early June, 2010. The router that I bought this time went down to Australia to my business partner's home office to use there, because he cannot buy one in Australia at any price: they just aren't offered there yet, so I took it upon myself to score one for him and the network in his home office, and he is just like I am by now: a believer in this E3000 system 100% without qualification, without doubts, and without any negative thoughts whatsoever!

It's not every day that we have products this good come into our lives and uses, and this ladies and gentlemen is the best router that the good, old All-American $$$ can buy, bar none, no doubt as to that statement! The Cisco-Linksys E3000 Dual Band Router gets the Wavey Davey 100% Solid Gold and 5-Star Award for Quality, Value, and Performance, bar none! There isn't anyone quite like it no matter what other brands you look at, or even other Cisco-Linksys models for that matter, it stands alone as the No.1 router of any type today, in November 2010.

Wavey Davey - November 14, 2010
